An important realization about usability

I know everyone's talking about the AOL-Time Warner merger and I don't want to be a copy cat, but I realize now how wrong I was about AOL. Back in 1996 or so, I was thinking they were about all done for. Why would anyone pay to use them, I thought, when you can get better service cheaper from an ISP? And without the Big Brother feeling? Boy was I wrong. I overestimated the general public's tech savvy, and it's taught me a good lesson. I no longer assume everyone knows as much as I do about computers, nor does everyone feel as comfortable as I do using them. And I realize people will pay more money for something if it's easier to use, regardless of whether it's a superior product.
